OpenIDIDComm

The OpenID4VCI and OpenID4VP specifications define protocols for issuance and verification of Verifiable Credentials between Issuer, Wallet, and Verifier extending the commonly used OAuth 2.0 protocol. Currently the two OpenID4VCI/VP-Protocols are missing a feature to enable future communication between the involved parties. To add this feature to the OpenID4VCI/VP-Protocols we want to utilize DIDComm, a transport agnostic messaging protocol based on Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). Therefore, the goal of this work is to write an extension for the two OpenID4VCI/VP-Protocols that additionally allows the creation of a DIDComm channel for future communication. This repo should function as a proof of concept. Explicitly, it is no final product.

Use Cases for OpenIDIDComm

There are different use cases in which the combination of the OpenID4VCI/VP-Protocols and DIDComm has advantages. In general, any use case in which the participants benefit from DIDComm can be implemented with our OpenIDIDComm draft. The most obvious use case is the communication between the parties involved after the cedential has been issued. But there are other use cases too:

Crendetial Revocation

Imagine you have received a credential from an issuer. If this credential is no longer valid and needs to be revoked or the credential information needs to be renewed, this can be done using a DIDComm channel that has already been set up.

Batch Issuance

A DIDComm channel that is already established can also be useful when issuing batches (i.e. credentials that are issued in batches). If the issuer sends new credentials via the existing DIDComm channel, the issuer can be sure that the issuance of the following credentials will reach the right person.

Digital Diploma

The End-User clicks on this link for the issuance of a digital diploma and is redirected to a digital Wallet. The Wallet notifies the End-User that a Credential Issuer offered to issue a diploma Credential. The wallet notifies user that an issuer offered the issuance of a credential. The user confirms this and is redirecrted to the issuance service. There the issuance of the digital diploma happens. If a DIDComm channel is set up when issuing their diploma, and later a student completes their Master's degree, the Master's credential can also be issued directly and the student receives a notification in the DIDComm channel.

Employer Credential

A user is starting a new job. The employer requests him to upload documents to his portal. Later, the user receives a notification stating that the employee credential is ready to be claimed. He recevies a QR-Code. The user scans this code, which opens the wallet on his smartphone. Meanwhile, the user has received a message with a transaction Code. After entering it in the wallet, the user confirms the issuance and receives the employee credential in a wallet. With OpenIDIDComm, right now a DIDComm channel would exist between the user and the employer. As soon as there are other work-related credentials ready, the employee recevies a DIDComm message and a credential offer via the channel. No additional work is needed then.

Criminal Record

The user wants to acquire a digital criminal record. Therefore he must visit the administration's office to request the official criminal record be issued as a credential. After presenting an ID document, the user scans a QR code and is notified that the issuance takes some time.

In the wallet the user notices that the issuance of the digital record is in progress. After a few days, user receives a notification stating that the requested credential was successfully issued. Upon opening the wallet, user is queried about the download and the wallet fetches and saves the new credential. With OpenIDIDComm, there now is a persistent DIDComm channel between the user and the administration's office, which knows the identity of the user due to the initial presentation of the ID document. If another official document is needed, the user can easily request this via a DIDComm message. Then he can recevie the offer for this credential directly via DIDComm and there is no need for him to visit the administration's office once more.

Wallet-initiated Issuance of a Driving License

There are cases in which a user wants to present a credential which needs to be issued first. Imagine there is a verifier app that is requesting the presentation of a driving license. The user's wallet determines the requested credential type(s) from the presentation request and notifies the user that there is currently no matching credential. The wallet selects an issuer capable of issuing the missing credentials and sends the user to the issuer's website/app/service. Once authenticated and consent is provided, the user is redirected back to the wallet, where the credential is now present. Such credentials often have a limited validity. Before the document's credential becomes invalid, the DIDComm channel established during the issuance can be used to inform the user of this and, if necessary and wanted, send them the new credential directly.

Onboarding

To familiarize yourself with the topic, it is worth taking a look at the following sources:

OpenID4VC

To understand OpenID4VC, it is helpful to first understand OAuth 2.0, which is the basis of our work. A look at the official documentations could help:

  • OAuth 2.0: OAuth 2.0 is an authorization framework that allows third-party applications to access resources on behalf of a user without sharing credentials. It is widely used in modern web and mobile applications. OAuth 2.0 operates through tokens. Users authorize applications to access their resources via an authentication server. The application uses access tokens to access these resources. If the token expires, a refresh token can be used to obtain a new access token without requiring credentials again.

Finally, the OpenID4VC spec (OpenID for Verifiable Credentials ) is a standard based on OpenID Connect which can be used to issue and use Verifiable Credentials. One can distinguish OID4CVI and OID4VP. For a better overview, the key concepts of OID4VCI and OID4VP are listed below.

OID4VCI

OID4VCI is used for the issuance of Verifiable Credentials. It provides an API containing (not only) the following endpoints:

  • Credential Endpoint: mandatory endpoint, from which credentials are issued
  • Batch Credential Endpoint: optional endpoint for the issuance of multiple credentials at once
  • Deferred Credential Endpoint: optional endpoint for the deferred issuance of credentials

A brief description of the OID4VCI workflow shows how the protocol works: For each credential, the Wallet sends one Credential Request to the Credential Endpoint. This request is a POST request specifying the format, the proof, the credential_identifier and credential_response_encryption in its body.

OID4VP

OpenID4VP is used for the presentation of Verifiable Credentials. It extends the OAuth2.0 flow by introducing the so called VP Token as a container which allows users to present their presentations to verifiers via a wallet. One can distinguish different scenarios where the verifier and the user are using the same device (Same-Device-Flow) or using different devices (Cross-Device-Flow):

  • Same-Device-Flow: Authorization Request und Response are passed with redirects between the user’s wallet and the verifier
  • Cross-Device-Flow: The Authorization Request of the verifier is rendered as a QR-code which can be scanned by the user using its wallet.

Comparison of the different OpenID flows

One can distinguish two different flows: The Authorization Code Flow and the Pre-Authorized Code Flow. One can also distinguish between immediate and deferred credetial issuance. The first means that the credential asked for is directly issued and the latter means that the credential is issued after some time. Another possibility to distinguish differend flows is the same-device vs. the cross-device credential offer. Either the offer is received from the same device the wallet is installed on or the offer is communicated to the wallet from another device.

Authorization Code Flow

The issuer uses end-user authentication at the Authorization endpoint. There are two different versions:

  • Wallet-initiated version: End-user comes across verifier wallet that wants a credential. If a matching credential is missing, the wallet selects a credential issuer.
  • Issuer-initiated version: The request is sent to the issuer after the communication with the issuer itself.
Pre-authorized Code Flow

The issuer uses out-of-band mechanisms outside of the flow. Before initiating a flow with the wallet, the issuer conducts the steps required to prepare the issuance of credentials.

DIDComm

The DIDComm Protocol is a messaging protocol based on Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). It is essential to understand the idea behind DIDs, DID Documents, and DID resolution to know how DIDComm works. The following links provide a good overview over these topics:

  • DIDs
    • A short summary for the most important functionality of DIDs (on german)
  • DID Specification
    • A basic understanding can be achieved by looking at the simple Example, the architecture overview, and diving into the DID Documents Examples
    • To further learn about the meaning of the DID Document propoerties we recommend reading the chapter core properties with a focus on the different verification methods, relationships, and the service propertie
    • When translating DIDs into DID Documents one has to understand the process of DID Resolution (Chapter 7.1 without subchapters is enough!). It is very helpful to read about the resolution rules of some DID methods such as did:peer and did:web
  • DIDComm Specification
    • After learning how DIDs work and what information is stored inside DID Documents it is fairly straight forward to read the DIDComm Specification

Requirements

Primary:

  • DIDComm channel in addition to OID4VCI/VP for future communication between parties (Holder and Issuer or Holder and Verifier)
  • support both flows (authorization and pre-autorization flow)
  • Enforce DIDComm channel before VC is issued/verified
  • No change of the OID4VCI/VP Specification (but extension with additional parameters possible)

Secondary, optional:

  • Ideally same solution for both protocols (OpenID4VCI + OpenID4VP)
  • Different DIDs for Credential Issuance and DIDComm

Required Steps:

  • DID Discovery (Get DID from at least one party)
  • DID resolving to DID Document (with service endpoint)
  • Linking DIDComm Channel and OID4VCI/VP flow (How can one know, that both protocols are used in the same context)

Solutions

Every Solution should describe how it solves the requirements and required steps.
Furthermore, every solution should evaluate its benefits (i. e. what secondary requirements were met), its limitations (i. e. what secondary requirements were not met), and contain sequence diagrams for visualization.

DIDComm Token

Another approach uses the OAuth 2.0 inherent concept of scopes. The Access Token scope parameter is extended with the DIDComm value to express the usage for the DIDComm channel creation. The Wallet then sends a DIDComm Ping containing the Access Token in order to create a session correlation.

Further work

To make it possible to execute the various issuance methods without having to commit to a dedicated method before starting the issuer client, it seems conceivable to adapt the issuer design. With the help of extensions for the supported methods (currently DID JWT, DID Separated and DID Token), it should be possible to cover all methods within a single issuer client and handle the requests accordingly depending on their content.
