What is ListingsThatFit?

ListingsThatFit is a service that scans eBay clothing listings from specific sellers, parses those listing descriptions for in-text measurements, and turns those measurements to data. Those listings can then be queried by their measurements, and reports can be generated. For example, ListingsThatFit can be told, 'Give me all suits listings ending this coming Sunday that have a shoulder measurement of 18.5" to 18.75", a chest measurement of 22" to 22.75", etc'. This core feature, that clothing listings can be searched for by their measurements, is not offered by eBay itself or any service that I found within 4 years of thinking about it.

This is a project I've had in mind since before I could program, in 2014. It was begun as a final project for Harvard's CS50 MOOC.

Roadmap

[FEB 2019] The current goal is to convert the parsing side of this to a severless function and host that somewhere separate from the db, or host them both on a server. Reporter will become a separate service that connects to the db/server. This will be a fantastic chance to to learn REST API design.

Once the db exists (however, wherever it exists) as a contactable REST API, I can (learn and) wrap it in a GraphQL client which can then connect to a Reporter PWA (that I'll also build).

  1. Make database tables
  • Users
    • Shirt size specifics + brands/price guidelines
    • Shoe size specics + brands/price guidelines
    • Jacket size specifics + brands/price guidelines
    • Suit size specifics + brands/price guidelines
    • Pants size specifics + brands/price guidelines
    • Custom keyword watch list
    • Subscribed sellers
  • Sellers
  1. Write functions to query ebay with user preferences
  2. Write site
  • Registration
  • Preferences
    • Size preferences
    • Subscribed sellers
    • Notification schedule
  1. Have a MVP for the site I've wanted to build since 2014

Rough MVP todo for the minimum needed to email people matches by hand

  • BeautifulSoup patterns to match sportcoat measurement templates
  • measurementType model
  • measurements link table
  • fully flesh out items table
  • script to scour template using BS and create item entry (only sportcoats for now)
  • script to pull down all items and create entries for items
    • parser for suits
    • parser for sportcoats
    • parser for casual shirts
    • parser for dress shirts
    • parser for pants
    • parser for coats and jackets
    • parser for sweaters
  • Script to remove old listings from db
  • Measurement + tolerance association table
  • Foreign key linkup to above association table
  • Query to search for matching listings for User's measurements + tolerances
  • Query for listings matching ad-hoc measurements + tolerances
  • plaintext report generation for query results that can be output to an email

Steps to buildout rest of app and deploy

  • Proper logging
  • Some test coverage
  • Dev environment parity
    • Seed data generator for dev database
  • User account with measurements
  • Integrate user measurements form with site
  • UI to display matching items from current week
  • UI to display matching items for current week PLUS next week
  • UI for results from ad hoc measurements search
  • proper login/out
  • Plaintest report template for emails
  • Email report script and schedule
  • buy URL
  • Prod server
  • deploy to server
  • link URL to server
