Reproduction

OS: Pop!_OS 21.04 (Ubuntu)
node version: v14.18.1
npm version: 7.5.2
Vue CLI version: 4.5.13
Vue version: 3.0.0

Steps to reproduce the behavior

This is what I did so far:

vue create foo

# select default Vue 3

cd foo

npm install pinia

I get this error

I don't know why but it's possible to install Pinia via plugin

https://github.com/wobsoriano/vue-cli-plugin-pinia

So running

vue add vue-cli-plugin-pinia

works..

I tested and pinia installs normally so this is either a problem with your npm registry or there was a disruption with npm and you just have to try installing it again.

Hey @posva. I saw your Tweet about Pinia & Nuxt 3, so I tried to add it to my new Nuxt 3 project. Unfortunately, I got a very similar error:

Temporary I removed @fortawesome/vue-fontawesome. I found it was a reason for most of my problems with Nuxt 3 and other dependencies.

For me it was @headlessui/vue, removing it, and adding it back after installing pinia seems to work

It seems to be a number of packages that conflict with pinia for some reason. Does your npm output hint towards any specific package(s)?

In my case, the biggest problem is a conflict with vue version from vue-demi which is used by universal packages (for vue 2 & 3).

Add this to package.json, it works for me.
