What's the purpose of the "workbench" directory ?

I've started a new package using the laravel-package-tools but I've noticed a new workbench directory that I didn't see in older versions of the skeleton.

What exactly is the purpose of this directory ? And what files should go in there ? And is it safe to remove it ?

It' a bit of a newish, undocumented feature of test bench. I'll blog about this soon.
