I have come across a situation (filtering content by date ranges) where I would like the user to be able to say "all dates up to X date" or "all dates after X date".
One option could make use of the predefined date range picker. Add 2 options "from date" or "to date", then have the calendar that appears behave as a single date picker
Another suggestion is a place-holder button that could essentially assign 'null' (or whatever) to the start/end dates.
Before the first selection, the button could say "up to". Then before the second selection it could change to "or later".
A few edge cases I can think of:
if minDate/maxDate are set, the button could change to "from X date" or "until X date"
the text on the button might need to be changed, if the user doesn't want to limit the dates
